 FISHING REPORT

 Sunday, July 25, 2010

For the Muskie guys...time to get in the boat.  The water temps are warm, the sun is hot and the Muskies have been starting to turn on.  Hearing reports almost everyday now of someone catching a 40"+ fish and having multiple follows.  Natural colored buck tails seem to be working well.  Most species of fish are keying on cabbage beds right now.  Reports of Bass, Crappie, Walleye, and Northerns in the vabbage beds now are common.  Crappies continue to hit on a 1/16 oz jig or Johnsons Beetle Spin tipped with a Crappie minnow fished over the cabbage beds in the early morning and evening.  Casting spinnerbaits or lures over top of the cabbage weeds during the day is a good way to look for aggressive Pike and Bass.  Have also heard sucess stories from Walleye anglers that are pulling crawlers through the cabbage and catching fish.  That is a tough way to fish but it is a good way to put fish in the boat in July and August when the water temps are near 80 degrees.  Look for Bass on the edges of weed beds and along the breaklines close to deep water.  Fish them slowly with plastic worms along those edges.  Leech Lake Walleyes seem to be concentrating on two areas, the rocks and the weeds.  Good numbers of fish have been caught during the late evening bobber fishing over the and around the cabbage beds and weeds in Walker Bay.  The mid-lake rock structures have also produced some fish.  Depths between 12 and 20 feet, depending on the wind and the time fo the day.
